Rusalka
What is a Rusalka?
A rusalka is a mythical creature from Slavic folklore, often associated with water and death.
The word "Rusalka" comes from the Latin "Rosalia", a name for a festival of roses and the dead.
Rusalki are usually depicted as beautiful women with long hair, sometimes with fish tails or green skin.
They can lure men into the water with their singing or dancing, and then drown them or tickle them to death.
These creatures can also grant wishes or tell fortunes, but they are often capricious and vengeful.
Rusalka is also the name of a famous opera by Antonín Dvořák, based on a fairy tale by Jaroslav Kvapil.
The story is about a rusalka who falls in love with a human prince and gives up her voice to become human, but is betrayed by him and returns to the water.
The opera features the popular aria "Song to the Moon", sung by the rusalka in the first act.
Rusalki are part of the rich and diverse Slavic mythology, which has inspired many works of art and literature.
They reflect the connection between nature and humanity, as well as the themes of love, death, and transformation.
