Naiad
What is a Naiad?
A naiad is a type of female spirit, or nymph, in Greek mythology, who presides over fountains, wells, springs, streams, brooks and other bodies of fresh water.
Naiads are often beautiful, lighthearted, and beneficent, and they are associated with various local cults and rituals.
Naiads can be dangerous or jealous if they are offended or spurned by humans.
For example, the naiads kidnapped Hylas, a companion of Heracles, because they were fascinated by his beauty.
Another naiad, Salmacis, raped and fused with Hermaphroditus, the son of Hermes and Aphrodite, when he tried to escape from her.
Naiads can also bless or protect humans who respect them and their waters.
For instance, the naiad Arethusa was turned into a spring by Artemis to escape from the river god Alpheus, and she later became a source of fresh water for the city of Syracuse.
Naiads are one of the many classes of nymphs in Greek mythology, who are minor deities of nature.
Naiads can be further classified into various types according to the type of water they inhabit, such as crinaeae (fountains), pegaeae (springs), eleionomae (marshes), limnades (lakes), and potamides (rivers).

What does a Naiad look like?
Naiads are usually depicted as beautiful, young, and graceful women, often with aquatic attributes, such as fish tails, water plants, or shells.
They are also associated with fertility, healing, and inspiration.
Naiads are not immortal, but they are very long-lived and have a strong connection to their water source.
If the water dries up or becomes polluted, the naiad may die or become ill.
Naiads are generally friendly and benevolent to humans, but they can also be jealous, vengeful, or possessive, especially if someone tries to harm their water or take away their lovers.
Some famous naiads in Greek mythology are:
Arethusa, who was pursued by the river god Alpheus and turned into a spring by Artemis.
Castalia, who was a spring on Mount Parnassus and a source of inspiration for poets and musicians.
Daphne, who was a naiad of the river Peneus and transformed into a laurel tree by her father to escape from Apollo.
Salmacis, who was a naiad of a spring and merged with the youth Hermaphroditus, creating a being of both sexes.
Other types of nymphs include dryads (tree nymphs), oreads (mountain nymphs), oceanids (sea nymphs), and nereids (sea nymphs).
Nymphs are often the companions or lovers of gods, heroes, and mortals, and play important roles in many myths and legends.
