Long ago, in the twilight days of the ancient world, when the realms of men, yokai, and celestial beings intermingled, a young Oni named Mōryō lived among the mist-shrouded mountains of the east. Unlike most of his kin, Mōryō was neither cruel nor savage. His skin bore the pale violet of the twilight sky, and his eyes glowed with the embers of distant stars. Born to the ruling Oni clan, he was destined to be a guardian of sacred lands, a protector of the natural balance between realms. But fate, ever twisted, had other plans.
Mōryō's life changed the day he stumbled upon a hidden grove, deep within the forest, where ancient magic pulsed through the air. There, nestled between towering sakura trees, he found an egg, larger than any he had seen before. Its surface shimmered with scales of gold and silver, and an aura of pure power radiated from within. It was the egg of the Celestial Dragon, a being so revered that its very presence was said to maintain harmony between the skies and the earth.

In the heart of the forest, a warrior stands strong as a deep red glow fills the air, illuminating his sword and the forest floor blanketed in autumn leaves.
Fearing what others might do if they discovered the egg, Mōryō took it to his home, concealing it in a sacred cave. The Oni clans had long coveted the power of dragons, and though Mōryō was not ambitious like the others, he knew the egg would draw dangerous attention. He vowed to protect it, not for power, but to preserve the balance it represented. He believed that one day, when the time was right, the dragon would be reborn and usher in a new age of peace.
However, not all who walked the ancient lands were so pure of heart.
The Betrayer
Among the Oni, there was another young warrior, Shuten, who had always lived in Mōryō's shadow. Shuten's fiery red skin and dark horns reflected his nature - ambitious, impatient, and filled with a desire for power that burned as hot as the flames of the underworld. For years, Shuten had envied Mōryō's strength, his nobility, and the quiet reverence that followed him wherever he went. Shuten craved what Mōryō had, and more.
When rumors of Mōryō's secret began to spread - whispers of the hidden dragon's egg - Shuten saw his opportunity. He approached Mōryō with a facade of brotherly concern, claiming he wished to help protect the egg from those who sought its power. Mōryō, ever trusting of his kin, welcomed Shuten's aid, grateful to have another guardian for the celestial treasure.
But Shuten's heart was already poisoned by greed.
The Celestial Bargain
One fateful night, as a storm raged across the mountain peaks, Shuten made his move. While Mōryō meditated in the temple, seeking guidance from the spirits, Shuten ventured into the cave where the egg was kept. He knelt before it, feeling the surge of power that radiated from within. The dragon inside was close to hatching. If he could harness that power, Shuten believed, he would be unstoppable - an Oni king ruling over yokai and men alike.
As he reached out to touch the egg, the ground trembled, and the winds howled. Suddenly, a figure appeared before him - an ancient dragon spirit, wreathed in shimmering light. The spirit's voice echoed in Shuten's mind, deep and resonant, like the rumbling of distant thunder.
"Do you know what you seek, young Oni?" the dragon asked. "This egg holds not just power, but the essence of life itself. The balance of the world rests within."
Shuten sneered, unwilling to be swayed. "I seek what is rightfully mine. Mōryō does not deserve it - he is weak. The world needs a ruler of strength, not one bound by honor and duty."
The dragon spirit gazed at Shuten, its eyes glowing like molten gold. "You may take the egg," it said slowly, "but at a cost. To claim its power, you must make a sacrifice of equal weight."

This striking image vividly captures the essence of Mōryō, where the clash of beauty and terror unfolds in a flower-filled landscape, reminding us of nature's unpredictable nature.
Shuten hesitated, but only for a moment. He knew exactly what the spirit meant.
The Evocative Betrayal
That same night, Shuten lured Mōryō to the cave, under the pretense of checking on the egg's safety. Mōryō, sensing nothing amiss, followed, his mind still focused on the egg's protection. As they approached the entrance, Shuten moved with deadly intent, drawing a hidden blade from his robe. The blade had been dipped in venom from the Nure-Onna, a serpent yokai whose poison could paralyze even the mightiest Oni.
Before Mōryō could react, Shuten plunged the blade into his back. The venom coursed through Mōryō's veins, freezing his body in place. The betrayal struck deeper than the blade; Mōryō had considered Shuten his brother, and the wound of trust broken was more painful than any physical injury.
With Mōryō helpless, Shuten approached the egg. As he reached out to claim it, the dragon spirit appeared again, its voice cold and emotionless. "You have made your choice, Shuten. The balance will shift, and the price will be paid."
Ignoring the warning, Shuten grasped the egg. A surge of energy coursed through him, and for a brief moment, he felt invincible. But as quickly as the power came, it twisted and turned against him. The dragon spirit's eyes gleamed with sorrow and judgment.
"You desired dominion, but the price for disrupting the balance is your soul."
Shuten's scream echoed through the cave as the power he sought consumed him. His body warped and twisted, becoming a monstrous dragon-like form, but with none of the grace or majesty of the celestial beings. He had become a creature of darkness, cursed to roam the earth, never truly part of the dragon or Oni realms, a shadow of his former self.
The Awakening
Mōryō, still paralyzed but conscious, could only watch in horror as Shuten transformed. The venom's hold on him began to weaken as the storm outside intensified. Thunder cracked the sky open, and with a blinding flash of light, the egg began to hatch.
The cave was filled with the radiant glow of the newborn Celestial Dragon. Its scales shimmered with the brilliance of the stars, and its wings stretched wide, casting ethereal light on the stone walls. The dragon turned to Mōryō, its eyes filled with compassion.
With a gentle breath, the dragon's energy flowed through Mōryō, healing his wounds and breaking the curse of the venom. Slowly, Mōryō rose to his feet, gazing at the celestial being before him.

This mesmerizing portrayal of Shōki captures the balance between power and tranquility, as it stands amid the enchanting fog, evoking curiosity and a sense of exploration in the mystical realm.
"You have kept your vow, young Oni," the dragon spoke softly. "The balance has been preserved because of your heart. Though betrayal sought to undo your noble efforts, your spirit remained pure."
As the storm subsided, the dragon ascended into the heavens, leaving Mōryō standing alone in the cave. Shuten was gone, his monstrous form having disappeared into the darkness.
The Silent Guardian
From that day forward, Mōryō became a solitary figure. He lived not among the Oni, but in the wilderness, forever guarding the boundary between realms. His heart, once full of trust, was now guarded by the scars of betrayal. But he remained steadfast, knowing that the dragon's balance would endure, and his sacrifice had preserved the world.
And so, the legend of Mōryō, the young Oni who protected the Celestial Dragon's egg, was whispered through the ages - a tale of trust, betrayal, and the heavy cost of desire.
