What is a Simurgh?

A Simurgh is a mythical bird in Persian mythology and literature.

It is sometimes compared to other legendary birds such as the phoenix and the humā, but it has its own unique characteristics and symbolism.

The Simurgh is usually depicted as a large, winged creature with the head of a dog, the claws of a lion, and the feathers of a peacock.

It is said to be very wise, benevolent, and powerful, capable of carrying off an elephant or a whale.

The Simurgh also has a connection to the number thirty, as it lives for 1700 years and then burns itself to ashes, from which another Simurgh emerges.

The word Simurgh can also mean "thirty birds" in Persian, and this is the basis of a famous story by the poet Attar of Nishapur, called The Conference of the Birds.

In this story, a group of birds embark on a journey to find the Simurgh, who is their king.

Along the way, they face many challenges and hardships, and many of them give up or die.

In the end, only thirty birds reach the destination, where they realize that they themselves are the Simurgh, and that the Simurgh is a symbol of their own spiritual unity.

The Simurgh has influenced the art and culture of many regions that were under the Persian sphere of influence, such as Georgia, Armenia, and the Eastern Roman Empire.

It has also appeared in modern works of fiction, such as the web serial Worm, where it is the name of one of the Endbringers, a monstrous creature that attacks humanity.

A Simurgh is a fantasy creature
That comes from Persian lore
It has a peacock's tail and feathers
But its head is like a dog's, and more

It has the claws of a lion
And a body that is huge
It can carry off an elephant
Or a whale, if it so choose

It is not a vicious monster
But a wise and kind protector
It can purify the land and water
And bestow fertility and nectar

It is also very ancient
And has seen the world destroyed thrice
It has learned the secrets of all ages
And can give you good advice

So if you ever meet a Simurgh
Don't be scared or run away
Just admire its splendid beauty
And listen to what it has to say
