A fairy is a type of mythical being or legendary creature, generally described as having a human-like appearance, magic powers, and a connection to nature.

Fairies are found in the folklore of many European cultures, such as Celtic, Slavic, Germanic, and French, and also in some Asian and American traditions.

They are often depicted as small, winged, and beautiful, but they can also be mischievous, cruel, or helpful, depending on the situation.

Fairies have different names and characteristics in different regions, such as pixies, sprites, elves, brownies, leprechauns, and more.

These creatures are usually invisible to humans, but they can reveal themselves or interact with humans in various ways, such as granting wishes, making deals, stealing children, or falling in love.

Fairies have their own realm, called fairyland or faerie, which is sometimes seen as a parallel world, a hidden dimension, or a place of the dead.

They have no souls and do not age, but they can die or be killed by certain means, such as iron, salt, or fire.

Fairies are fascinated by human culture and often borrow or imitate human objects, clothes, or customs.

Some examples of famous fairies in literature and art are:
  • Tinker Bell, the fairy companion of Peter Pan in the stories by J.M.
    Barrie and the Disney adaptations.
  • Titania and Oberon, the fairy queen and king in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
  • The Fairy Godmother, who helps Cinderella in the fairy tale and the Disney movie.
  • The Tooth Fairy, who collects children's teeth and leaves money or gifts in exchange.
  • The Sugar Plum Fairy, who rules over the Land of Sweets in the ballet The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky.
