Aguhaceratops
What kind of animal is Aguhaceratops?
Aguhaceratops is a genus of horned dinosaur that lived in the Late Cretaceous period, about 77 million years ago, in what is now west Texas.
It belongs to the subfamily Chasmosaurinae, which are characterized by long frills and long brow horns.
Aguhaceratops has a heart-shaped frill with several spike-like hornlets, and its brow horns curve backwards.
It was about 4.3 meters long and weighed 1.5 metric tons.
Two species of Aguhaceratops are known: A.mariscalensis and A.mavericus.
They differ in the shape and size of their frills and horns.
Aguhaceratops was named after the Aguja Formation, where its fossils were found.
This dinosaur was a herbivorous dinosaur that fed on low-growing plants.
It may have used its horns and frill for defense or display.
Aguhaceratops was first described as a species of Chasmosaurus by Lehman in 1989, based on a partial skull.
Later, Lucas and colleagues reassigned it to its own genus in 2006, and Lehman and colleagues described a second species in 2016.
Aguhaceratops is one of the few ceratopsians known from Texas, along with Bravoceratops and Texasaurus.
It is also one of the oldest chasmosaurines, predating more famous relatives like Triceratops and Torosaurus.
