Adasaurus
What kind of animal is Adasaurus?
Adasaurus is a genus of dromaeosaurid dinosaur that lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous period, about 70 million years ago.
It was a small, bipedal carnivore with a sickle-shaped claw on the second toe of each hind foot.
This dinosaur was named after an evil spirit in Mongolian mythology.
Adasaurus had a reduced second toe claw compared to other dromaeosaurids, which may have limited its use as a weapon.
It also had a curved lacrimal bone in its skull, a feature shared with Austroraptor.
Adasaurus was originally classified as a dromaeosaurine, but later studies have placed it in the subfamily Velociraptorinae, along with Velociraptor and its relatives.
Adasaurus is known from two partial specimens found in the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia.
The holotype consists of a partial skull, some vertebrae, a shoulder blade, a sternal plate, and parts of the pelvis and hind limbs.
The paratype includes a partial skull, a lower jaw, and some vertebrae.
Both specimens are housed in the Mongolian Paleontological Center in Ulaanbaatar.
