What kind of animal is Abelisaurid?
An abelisaurid is a type of dinosaur that belonged to the group of theropods, which were bipedal carnivores.
Abelisaurids lived during the Cretaceous period, mainly in the southern continents that formed the supercontinent of Gondwana.
They had short and tall skulls, with bony projections and sculpturing on some of the bones.
They also had stocky hind limbs and reduced forelimbs.
Some of the known abelisaurids include Carnotaurus, Abelisaurus, and Majungasaurus.
Some additional facts are:
- Abelisaurids were closely related to ceratosaurians, another group of theropods that had distinctive horns and crests on their heads.
- Abelisaurids varied in size, but most of them were between 5 and 9 meters (17 to 30 feet) in length.
A possible exception was a new and unnamed specimen from Kenya, which might have reached 11 to 12 meters (36 to 39 feet). - Abelisaurids were probably adapted to hunting large prey, such as sauropods and titanosaurs, which were abundant in Gondwana.
They might have also competed with other predators, such as carcharodontosaurids and spinosaurids.
