What color is Urobilin?
Urobilin is a chemical compound that is responsible for the yellow color of urine.
It is a linear tetrapyrrole, which means it has four pyrrole rings connected by single bonds.
Urobilin is derived from the breakdown of heme, which is a component of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells.
Heme is degraded by enzymes in the liver and spleen, and converted to bilirubin, a yellow pigment that is excreted in bile.
Bile is a fluid that helps digest fats in the small intestine.
Some of the bilirubin in bile is further metabolized by bacteria in the large intestine, and transformed into urobilinogen, a colorless compound.
Urobilinogen can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream and transported to the kidneys, where it is filtered out and excreted in urine.
When urobilinogen is exposed to air, it is oxidized to urobilin, which has a more intense yellow color.
