What color is Feldgrau?
Feldgrau is a German word that means "field-grey".
It is a grayish-green color that was used as the official basic color of military uniforms of the German armed forces from the early 20th century until 1945 (West Germany) or 1989 (East Germany).
Armed forces of other countries also adopted various shades of feldgrau for their service uniforms.
Feldgrau was introduced in 1907 by the Prussian Army as the color of the field service uniform, with colored cuffs, facings, shoulder straps and gorgets.
It replaced the traditional brightly colored uniforms of the German Imperial Army, which were unsuitable for modern warfare.
The color feldgrau varied from light grey-green to dark grey-green, depending on the manufacturer, the fabric and the wear and tear.
In World War I, feldgrau proved to be effective as a camouflage color in the European battlefields.
However, it also made the soldiers more vulnerable to gas attacks, as the color blended with the clouds of poison gas.
Therefore, in 1915, a darker shade of feldgrau, known as "stone-grey", was adopted.
In World War II, the German Army continued to use feldgrau as the color of the field uniform, but with different styles and insignia.
The color became more brownish and less greenish over time, due to the shortage of quality dyes and fabrics.
Feldgrau was also used for the uniforms of the Waffen-SS, the Luftwaffe and the Kriegsmarine, with some variations and distinctions.
After World War II, feldgrau was still used by the East German National People's Army, under the name steingrau (stone-grey).
It was also adopted by the Austrian Bundesheer, following the German pattern.
Feldgrau is a color that has a strong association with the German military history, especially the two world wars.
It is a color that evokes the concepts of discipline, efficiency, loyalty and sacrifice, but also of aggression, violence, oppression and cruelty.
Feldgrau is a color that has a unique and complex meaning, depending on the historical and cultural context.
It is a color that reflects the past, but also influences the present and the future.
