The needletail is a common name for several species of swifts, which are fast-flying birds that belong to the family Apodidae.
One of the most well-known needletails is the white-throated needletail (Hirundapus caudacutus), also known as the needle-tailed swift or the spine-tailed swift.
The white-throated needletail is a migratory bird that breeds in Central Asia and southern Siberia, and winters in the Indian Subcontinent, Southeast Asia and Australia.
It is a rare vagrant in Western Europe and has been recorded as far west as Norway, Sweden and Great Britain.
The white-throated needletail is almost exclusively aerial, meaning that it spends most of its time in the air.
It builds its nests in rock crevices in cliffs or hollow trees.
