Alcyone is a genus of the tree kingfishers, near passerine birds in the subfamily Halcyoninae.
They are mostly large birds with heavy bills that prey on small ground animals and sometimes fish.
They occur in a variety of habitats, with woodland of various types the preferred environment for most.
Mortonagrion alcyone is a species of damselfly in the family Coenagrionidae.
It is endemic to Sri Lanka and has a blue and black coloration.
Alcyone was also a Thessalian princess in Greek mythology, the daughter of King Aeolus of Aeolia.
She was married to Ceyx, who died in a shipwreck.
Alcyone threw herself into the sea in grief and was transformed into a halcyon bird by the gods.

The halcyon bird is usually identified with the kingfisher or the European roller.
