Mongoose

A mongoose is a small, carnivorous mammal that belongs to the family Herpestidae.

There are two subfamilies of mongooses: the Herpestinae, which includes 23 species native to southern Europe, Africa, and Asia; and the Mungotinae, which includes 11 species native to Africa.

Mongooses have long faces and bodies, short legs, and long tails.

They have nonretractile claws that they use for digging.

They also have a large anal scent gland that they use for marking their territory and signaling their reproductive status.

Mongooses are one of the few mammals that have a natural resistance to snake venom, thanks to a mutation in their nicotinic acetylcholine receptor.
