The climate is subpolar, with cold winters and mild summers.
What does the Kodiak look like?
The Kodiak bear is a subspecies of the brown bear
But it's much bigger and has more shaggy hair
It lives on Kodiak Island and some nearby islands too
Off the coast of Alaska, where the weather is cold and blue
The Kodiak bear can weigh up to 720 kg
That's more than a grand piano or a big SUV
It's one of the largest land carnivores in the world
Along with the polar bear, which has white fur curled
The Kodiak bear has a big head and a hump on its back
It has long claws and teeth that can crack
It eats mostly plants, berries, fish and sometimes meat
But it can also scavenge garbage or human treats
The Kodiak bear is not very social, it likes to be alone
Except when it mates or when it has cubs to raise at home
It can live up to 25 years in the wild, or longer in captivity
But it faces threats from hunting, habitat loss and climate change activity
The Kodiak bear is a majestic and powerful creature
But it's also vulnerable and needs our care and feature
So let's respect its space and admire its beauty from afar
And hope that it will always roam free under the northern star
