Batagur

There are six species of Batagur, and all of them are critically endangered due to habitat loss, overexploitation, and pollution.

The species are:

• Batagur affinis – southern river terrapin

• Batagur baska – northern river terrapin

• Batagur borneoensis – painted terrapin

• Batagur dhongoka – three-striped roofed turtle

• Batagur kachuga – red-crowned roofed turtle

• Batagur trivittata – Burmese roofed turtle

Some of these species have distinctive features, such as the breeding coloration of the males, which turns their head and limbs red or orange.

They also have different ranges and preferences for nesting sites.
